10 Tips To Taking Great Holiday Pictures by Elbert Kennard
Holidays are a great time to take photographs for documenting family gatherings. Here are some tips to get those extra special images.
- Getting the right light can be a challenge. If you are inside using a point and shoot camera or even your cell phone, turn every light in the room on. Both of these cameras use the available light and then add a bit of flash to help the image, if available. Not all cell phones have flash.
- Using a tripod will make a big difference in keeping the camera still. The shutter speed will be slow which means any movement from the camera will put the image out of focus.
- Use the delayed timer to get yourself in the photo. If you still see shake in the image, look very closely at the image, it’s probably someone moving at the time the image is taken, not the camera.
- When posing your family, don’t put them up against a wall. Take your eyes away from the camera and look around your pose, look for lamps sticking out of someone’s head, or anything else that can be removed from the image.
- I like to think that every picture has already been taken, it’s my job to create an image that is different. Look to change the angle, don’t shoot straight on. Go up or go down, you’ll be surprised at how different the image will look.
- Always, always, always make sure your battery is charged. And have an extra fully charged battery. This will help make sure you get all the images you want.
- Always have an extra memory card just in case you fill the one in the camera.
- Make sure you are using the best image quality, so that photo editing such as cropping and making prints is easier.
- Take more images than you’ll ever use, both posed and candid. The beauty of digital is unlimited images.
- Have Fun! This will keep everyone relaxed and enjoy having their picture taken.
