Today I made a card using the Extraordinary Flora Bundle from Stampin’Up! The Extraordinary Flora Bundle is full of love, happiness, and florals for stamping and cutting out floral and botanical images in two quick steps! Color the line-art style florals with your favorite coloring technique, like we did tonight with our water color technique.
Watercoloring Made Simple with the Extraordinary Flora Bundle
If you’ve ever admired a watercolor card and thought, “I could never do that,”—think again! Today I’m sharing a fun and approachable watercoloring technique using the Extraordinary Flora Stamp Set and Bundle from Stampin’ Up! This project pairs beautifully with the coordinating washi tape and brings delicate line art to life with vibrant, fluid color.
For this card, I used:
-
Water painter brushes
-
Ink refills or Ink Pads
-
A clear block as my palette
-
Fluid 100 Watercolor Paper, which is perfect for blending and layering without warping
Why I Love This Technique
The inspiration came directly from the coordinating washi tape. I wanted to echo its soft yet vibrant look with free-flowing watercolor layers. The line art in the Extraordinary Flora set is perfect for this—it holds up beautifully to water while letting your colors shine.
Beginner Tips for Watercoloring Success
- Start light, build up – You can always add more color, but it’s harder to take it away!
- Use less water than you think – Too much can cause bleeding or loss of detail. Tap your brush on a paper towel before applying to your paper.
- Dry between layers – Letting each layer dry prevents muddiness and keeps your lines crisp. Use a heat tool if you’re impatient like me. 😉
- Clean your brush often – Especially when switching colors to avoid unintentional mixing.
Troubleshooting
Too much water? Blot with a paper towel quickly—it acts like a magic eraser.
Colors looking dull? Try layering with more concentrated ink or use a smaller brush for detail work.
Paper warping? Tape down the edges to a board or use smaller pieces of watercolor paper to control curling.
Handy Extras to Keep Nearby:
Paper towels (for blotting and cleaning your brush)
A cup of clean water (even if you’re using a water painter!)
A heat tool (to speed up drying and avoid smearing)
Grid paper or scrap paper underneath your workspace
